Becca: The Eco-Friendly Decor Piece with an East Lansing Twist

Updated: Aug 24

Behind each of our one-of-a-kind pieces within the Bottle Collection - USA Edition, there is a unique name and a personal story.

Here's Becca's...

In my early 20's I lived in East Lansing, MI and during that time, I met a gal named Becca. She was an extraordinary and lovely person who was actually just visiting from out of town (hehe).

I lived in East Lansing for a couple of years and let me tell ya, I've never experienced the snow in my life before then.

I grew up in South Texas so it was all foreign to me. The first time it froze I actually almost poured steamy hot water on my windshield to clear out the ice but thank goodness a neighbor screamed at me to "Stop!" before I would have probably cracked my windshield no less.

Oh yes... so here are a couple of things I learned first hand when enduring some serious cold weather:

Do this!

Why?

Layer like crazy

You don't know what you can handle and might as well be prepared. If you get hot, you can can always take it off.

Drive SLOW in the snow

I promise you will thank me. It's not fun losing control when there is ice on the road. I speak from experience!

Buy an auto car starter

I didn't have one and was envious of all my friends who would get in their cars and didn't have to wait for the heat to kick in.

Try out an electric throw

They keep you nice an cozy when you're sitting down at your desk or watching TV. Heck, might as well use it under your covers when going to bed. It's a win-win!

On another note, East Lansing brought me close to friends who attended Michigan State University (MSU).

That campus is amazing! I loved it - it is full of trees and has really nice landscaping. The curving roads along with the architecture of their buildings made this campus nice just to drive through it. I only had reference from the university I attended which was Baylor and in my opinion MSU was way bigger. "MSU's contiguous campus consists of 5,300 acres (2,100 ha),[5] 2,000 acres (810 ha) of which are developed. There are 563[5] buildings: 107[5] for academics, 131 for agriculture, 166 for housing and food service, and 42 for athletics." - Wikipedia

I love sports soooo I thought I would list out all of the conference championships won by MSU...lol, you're welcome :-)

  1. Football: MSU has won 7 Big Ten Football Championships, most recently in 2015.

  2. Men's Basketball: MSU has won 6 Big Ten Men's Basketball Championships, most recently in 2012.

  3. Women's Basketball: MSU has won 2 Big Ten Women's Basketball Championships, most recently in 2015.

  4. Baseball: MSU has won 4 Big Ten Baseball Championships, most recently in 2019.

  5. Hockey: MSU has won 3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Championships, most recently in 2007.

  6. Women's Cross Country: MSU has won 6 Big Ten Women's Cross Country Championships, most recently in 2019.

  7. Women's Soccer: MSU has won 3 Big Ten Women's Soccer Championships, most recently in 2020.

I cherished my time in East Lansing, with its warm community, beautiful campus, and memorable winters (despite being a Baylor fan at heart!).
