Jamie's Rapid City Adventure: 5 No-No's to Know and Eclectic Home Decor Inspiration

Updated: Aug 24

Behind each of our one-of-a-kind pieces within the Bottle Collection - USA Edition, there is a unique name and a personal story.

Here's Jamie's...

My girlfriend Jamie lives in Rapid City, South Dakota. Believe me, I never thought I'd go visit BUT I had the best time - I looooove Rapid City! Can I just say, there is an ice cream place that I couldn't help visit every day I was there. It is called Armadillo's and they have a flavor of the day which is always deeeelicious!!

Ok, enough about ice cream for now. First of all, I was pleasantly shocked by the stunning natural beauty all around. But, I also learned some important lessons on what NOT to do when visiting Rapid City. And, of course, I have to share these lessons with you to make sure your trip to Rapid City is just as amazing (but without the mishaps!)

  1. Don't under dress! The sun is deceptive and you'll think you can get away with a light jacket and a scarf. Don't do it! Mt. Rushmore was on my bucket list and when that sun went down, those twig legs you see on the picture under #1 were f-r-o-z-e-n.

  2. Don't look down! I went for a little hike up Black Elk Peak and it was a doozy. After huffing and puffing my way up to 7,242 feet, I learned that the pictures don't do the height justice. So, whatever you do, don't look down! p.s. I forgot how difficult hiking is but it's the best feeling once you complete it.

  3. Don't be cocky! It's all in good fun but when the trail (Mickelson Trail for that matter) is 100 miles and you're on 1 of 30 miles that you are going to do for the day and you have definitely left your friends behind - guess who is going to lose steam on mile 29? Yup! Sooo true. It was a good try on my part, lesson learned :-)

  4. Don't multi-task on a bike! This lesson hurt to learn. It was one of those I can't believe this happened to me moments that we try to avoid. OMG, please don't have your phone on google maps on one hand and try to maneuver your bicycle with the other hand. I ate it!!! Bad!! Good thing the bike landed on me, it was fine but me not so much. I didn't want the fun to end so I kept my fall to myself. Don't worry, there was a group of teens who watched the whole thing - it was definitely entertaining. All I heard after I passed them and wiped out in s-l-o-w motion was "uuuuuuhhh!!!", "$#!!!!!!!!+", "daaaaaayum!!!", "ffff********k!!!", and all sorts of wonderful descriptions of my pride and dignity taking a nice thud. Nice one.

  5. Don't rely on old shoes! Back in the early 90's I ran cross-country in high school and I got me some trail running shoes. I am not sure why in the world I would think they would hold up in 2020's - they definitely didn't! The soles literally came off of both shoes!!! Both!!! The worst part was that my girlfriend insisted on swapping out her very cushioned - I'm stepping on a cloud shoes - so we could finish the hike. Can we say every step was one of guilt and shame? Very much so.

So, there you have it, folks—five things NOT to do when visiting Rapid City, South Dakota. Follow these simple tips, and you're guaranteed to have an amazing adventure, just like I did (minus the mishaps!). And when you see Jamie, the upcycled bottle, sitting on your end table, you can thank her for the heads up on these No-No's to Know!
